Suicide Attempts : About the Condition

Suicide is the intentional taking of one's own life. People attempt suicide for any number of reasons, and usually a combination of reasons. These can include bereavement, depression, anxiety, shame, guilt, desperation, physical pain, emotional pressure and financial difficulties. A recent survey of Samaritans callers found that 86% of them were calling about a number of problems or worries, rather than one single thing.

The Samaritans estimate that across England and Wales there are as many as 140,000 attempted suicides every year; which is one attempt every 4 minutes. In the UK for people aged 15-24, suicide is the second biggest cause of death after road accidents.

It can really help to talk about how you really feel, as talking puts you back in control and can help identify what choices you have. However many people who feel suicidal don’t feel they can express their feelings due to embarrassment, or because they do not want to burden family or friends.

Others who feel suicidal may have tried to express their despair only to be told to pull themselves together, to put things in perspective or to count their blessings. None of these help if you are feeling suicidal, and it is important not to hide your true feelings as this will only save the problem for later. The following are the sort of feelings that people who are depressed or suicidal often feel. If you can identify with some or all of the following feelings, please seek help and talk to someone, particularly if you are considering suicide:

- Finding it hard to cope with everyday things
- Finding it hard to make simple decisions
- Having difficulty concentrating
- Finding it hard to get the motivation to get up in the mornings
- Feeling tearful at something which would not normally affect you that way
- Lacking energy and feeling very tired
- Not wanting to talk to or be with people, and conversation can be a struggle
- Eating, drinking or sleeping more or less than usual
- Using alcohol or drugs to cope with feelings
- Feeling restless and agitated                            
- Not taking care of yourself or feeling you don’t matter
- Having recurring thoughts of death and/or suicidal impulses, where suicide seems like a welcome relief

Suicide is not chosen; it happens when pain exceeds the resources for coping with pain. Therefore it can help to find a way to reduce the pain, or find a way to increase the coping resources. Both are possible with help.
