Panic Attacks & Anxiety: About the Condition

A panic attack is a severe attack of anxiety and fear which occurs suddenly, often without warning, and for no apparent reason. It is an exaggeration of the body’s normal response to fear, stress or excitement. When faced with a situation which is seen as potentially threatening, the body automatically gears itself up for danger, by producing quantities of adrenalin for fight or flight.

Panic attacks come on very quickly, symptoms usually peaking within 10 minutes. Most panic attacks last for between five and 20 minutes. Symptoms can include: palpitations, sweating and trembling, hot flushes or chills, shortness of breath, chest pains, nausea, feeling faint or dizzy, and feelings of unreality, or being detached from yourself.

Feeling anxious is a normal part of life. However, when panic attacks and anxiety constantly affects day-to-day life, it can become debilitating. Anxiety can also be a symptom of phobias and post-traumatic syndrome.

Psychological symptoms can include a sense of dread, difficulty concentrating, irritability and impatience. Physical symptoms can include dizziness, palpitations or an irregular heart beat, shortness of breath, sweating, dry mouth and difficulty in sleeping.

Those who suffer anxiety because of a phobia will often know what the cause of their anxiety is. However some people suffer from generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), where the feelings of anxiety are much more constant and tend to affect their day-to-day life.

Generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) is likely to be due to a combination of causes, including the body's biological processes, genetics and the environment, as well as a possible imbalance of chemicals in the brain.

Anxiety can also be linked to ongoing depression. Depression is a common mental disorder affecting about 15% of people at some point in their lives. Depression often results feelings of extreme sadness that can last for a long time. These feelings are severe enough to interfere with your daily life, and can last for weeks or months, rather than days. Other symptoms of depression are a loss of interest or pleasure, feelings of guilt or low self-worth, disturbed sleep or appetite, low energy, and poor concentration.

The following are the sort of feelings that people who have anxiety or are depressed often feel. If you can identify with some or all of the following feelings, please seek help and talk to someone:

- Finding it hard to cope with everyday things
- Finding it hard to make simple decisions
- Having difficulty concentrating
- Finding it hard to get the motivation to get up in the mornings
- Feeling tearful at something which would not normally affect you that way
- Lacking energy and feeling very tired
- Not wanting to talk to or be with people, and conversation can be a struggle
- Eating, drinking or sleeping more or less than usual
- Using alcohol or drugs to cope with feelings
- Feeling restless and agitated
- Not taking care of yourself or feeling you don’t matter
- Having recurring thoughts of death and/or suicidal impulses, where suicide seems like a welcome relief

Treatment for panic attacks and anxiety usually involves a combination of drugs, talking therapies and self help, and it will depend on the severity of the panic attacks.

The most commonly used talking treatment for panic attacks is Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). CBT is based on the principle that the way we feel is partly dependent on the way we think about things. It teaches you to behave in ways that challenge negative thoughts - for example, being active to challenge feelings of hopelessness.

There are also a couple of self-help techniques that you can use to help treat your panic attack symptoms.

Focus on a positive memory. During a panic attack, lots of things can go through your mind, including disaster or even death. Instead of letting your imagination focus on these negative thoughts and images, try and establish some positive visualisations. Think of a place or a situation that makes you feel peaceful, relaxed, or at ease. Once you know what this image is, you can try to focus your attention on visualising this scene. It should help to distract you from the situation, and in turn may help ease your symptoms.

Try not to fight a panic attack, as this can make the experience worse. Trying to fight it and then finding that you are unable to, can increase your sense of anxiety and panic. Instead, during a panic attack, reassure yourself by accepting that although it may seem embarrassing and your symptoms may be difficult to deal with, your attack is not life-threatening. Focus on the fact that your attack will have an end, and try your best to let it pass.

About Life Insurance for Panic Attacks

A life insurance policy is designed to pay out a lump sum upon the death of a person or persons named on the policy.

Most people understand that if they have a family or significant liability, then life insurance is a vital product to make sure the people and things they care about are protected.

There are many different types of life insurance available depending on your needs. The good news is that we are able to help you with all of them.

We take the time to ensure that our customers have the most appropriate life insurance to meet their needs, whilst also making sure that the price is right. Some of our most satisfied customers came to us as they were unable to obtain the life insurance they wanted elsewhere.

We can't guarantee that we can get you life insurance, but we will leave no stone unturned. Given our experience, if we are unable to get you life insurance cover, it is unlikely you will be able to get it at all. We will however give you a good understanding on future insurability, and an honest assessment of your situation.

Whatever your life insurance needs, we are able to help you. We have access to all the products from all of the UK's leading insurance providers.
