Of all the medical terms to be classified as ‘morbidly obese’ isn’t the most pleasant. Just some of the suggestions thrown up by a thesaurus for the term ‘morbidly’ are : Gruesomely, horrifyingly and ominously - among others. Would a doctor treating somebody with irritable bowel syndrome really describe them as ‘Horrifyingly Flatulent’ !! We hope not.
There are many reasons why somebody finds themselves being classified as obese. It is also true that some people term themselves as morbidly obese when they are overweight or just obese – There is a difference.
One of the best ways of determining if somebody is overweight, obese or morbidly obese is to calculate their Body Mass Index (BMI). It is also worth remembering that your BMI will also indicate of you are normal weight or even underweight. Your BMI is calculated by using your height and weight. These are plotted on a chart which then indicates which category you fall into. To save our customers the time and trouble of obtaining a chart, we have provided a very simple BMI Calculator which at a glance will show your grading (normal, obese, etc.) but perhaps more importantly for the purposes or our customers their chances of getting insurance.
At what point is someone classified as Morbidly Obese and can we insure them ?
Our calculator shows the following grades in assessing how overweight a customer is. They are : Overweight, Obese, Severely Obese and Morbidly Obese. A person is classified as Morbidly Obese if their BMI is 40 or over. As an example a Man who is 5ft 8in high and weights 18st 12lb is classified as Morbidly Obese however if he was exactly 6ft tall he would be Severely Obese, and again if he were just another 4 inches taller at 6ft 4in he would be Obese and his BMI would be 32.1 compared with the 40.1 BMI of the 5ft 8in customer.
The important news is that assuming no other medical conditions we are confident that we could get life insurance in all of the scenarios above. For the avoidance of doubt was can get life insurance if you are morbidly obese. Even if there are other complications then the way we work and our knowledge of the market means that we still feel we could find cover. In fact we can usually get cover for people with a BMI as high as 60.
One of the most recognised problems with Obesity is that it increases the likelihood of a customer suffering other diseases and illnesses, - Heart Disease being one of the most obvious. It is not giving any commercial secrets away to say that insurers don’t like heart problems. That doesn’t means that we can’t cover people who have heart conditions, but if somebody who has a reasonably high BMI also has a a history of heart problems, then we are going to have to work hard and have a little bit of luck to get you cover.
